A lot of adults I chat with seem genuinely interested about getting out on the mats. They are intrigued, they think the self defense is cool, they would like to get in better shape, or they could use some stress relief, but something is keeping them from trying it. Maybe they watch the kids or our demo team, and think wow, I can’t do that… without understanding that an adult class is so much different from a kids class! We aren’t jumping and spinning and rolling, we are simply learning traditional Okinawan Karate which in reality wasn’t designed with children in mind at all… so here’s my shot at dispelling many of the myths (call them excuses if you like) as to why many adults don’t train…
COMMON MYTHS ABOUT ADULTS DOING KARATE
- Karate is just for kids. Truth: So wrong! In fact 30 years ago, karate was almost exclusively for adults…it wasn’t until The Karate Kid, Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers that karate truly become the rage with kids. It’s great exercise, it’s great stress relief, it engages your mind and body, and in the process you are learning the valuable skills of self-protection.
- I’m too out of shape. Truth: Ummmmm, how exactly do think that’s going to change if you keep using it as an excuse not to exercise? And, karate classes will be interesting and fun, unlike getting on a treadmill or exercise bike.
- I can’t because I have a bad back, neck, knee, hip etc etc. Truth: While I would never advise you do something if your doctor doesn’t clear you for it, do you realize that just about everything can be modified if you have an injury? Almost all adults have a physical ailment or two (including me-hip replacement 3 years ago, herniated disc in my neck last summer) but that does not have to be an excuse not to train. I believe strongly that inactivity exacerbates ailments!
- I’m too busy. Truth: Everybody is busy, and some may legitmately not be able to make training if they work 12 hours a day 6 days a week, but I contend that’s a small minority. MOST should be able to MAKE 2 hours a week for their own personal health, fitness and enjoyment. We offer adult classes morning, early evening and later in the evening to try to accomodate everybody’s schedule.
- I don’t want to do belt promotions in front of all those people. Truth: Adults test in regular classes not when all kids test.
My advice to those adults who are truly interested, but have inhibitions… I’ll tell you what I tell the kids: Get over it! How can you learn new things, experience something awesome, improve yourself as a person if you aren’t willing to step outside of your comfort zone and TRY…it could be a life-changing experience!
